Abstract

Purpose- To assess the prevalence of various types of ocular trauma & its association with demographic parameters among patients reporting at ophthalmology emergency of a govt. medical college in East India.

Materials & Methods-A retrospective observational study, data of patients presenting over a period of 1 year was collected from hospital database. All ocular trauma cases with GCS ≥ 9 were included. Trauma classified according to BETTS classification.

Results-Out of 5378 patients attending for ocular emergency,1011(18.8%) presented with eye trauma, 23.04% open globe injuries & 76.9% close globe injuries were noted.

Ratio of injuries in males to females was 2:1.

The commonest cause of ocular trauma was RTA (17.2%) in males & domestic abuse (19.5%) in females.

Domestic abuse contributed to 58.8% of the total ocular traumas in females.

Conclusions-The result shows a high prevalence of domestic abuse during the study period (lockdown). Highest noted in the lower socioeconomic strata.
