Abstract
PURPOSE:To access and compare Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and optic nerve head changes in primary open angle glaucoma and normal patients using SD-OCT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was observational prospective case control study including 100 eyes of 50 patients with POAG and 100 eyes of 50 normal patients. All subjects underwent basic workup for glaucoma including Automated perimetry, gonioscopy, fundus examination, ONH and RNFL evaluation by Topcon SD-OCT.
RESULTS: Average RNFL thickness is significantly reduced in all quadrants in cases as compared to normal subjects. In POAG cases 75.80+/-19.63 micron and in normal subjects 104.18+/-6.85 micron. All ONH parameters differ in cases.Average RNFL thickness showed positive correlation with MD and negative with PSD.
CONCLUSION: Results indicate that SD-OCT is an effective tool to detect and measure decrease in RNFL thickness and early ONH changes in glaucoma,so noteworthy in early glaucoma diagnosis and preventing further damage.
