Abstract

To study dry eye disease (DED) in head & neck cancer (HNC) patients undergoing EBRT & find its correlation with dose of radiation.

A prospective cohort study conducted in HNC patients undergoing EBRT for 6 months. Radiation records of all patients noted. Patients evaluated prior to start of RT and then at 1 week,4 weeks,12 weeks post RT. All underwent history & complete ophthalmological examination including OSDI questionnaire,VA, anterior & posterior segment, complete dry eye work up, corneal staining & grading & Meibography by auto-ref. at each visit. Data analysed using percentage & microsoft excel.

Results: Total 50 patients examined with age range 24 – 80 yrs (median age-55 yrs). 36 M (72%) & 14 F (28%) patients.M: F ratio of 2.5:1.Total 16 (32%) patients showed DED. Correlation between radiation dose & DED came out to be 0.75

Occurrence of DED following EBRT is positively correlated to radiation dose & its incidence increases with increase in total radiation dose delivered.
