Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of pre-operative topical steroids in the outcome of phacotrabeculectomy in primary glaucoma.METHODOLOGY: 81cases were randomised to Group A, where pre-operative topical fluoromethalone 0.1% was given for 10 days, while stopping topical antiglaucoma drugs and Group B with no pre-operative topical steroid. Patients were followed up for a period of 6 months. RESULT: IOP control at 6 months postoperatively in Group A (11.67±2.8 mmHg) was significantly higher than Group B (13.66±4.1mmHg), p value = 0.016. Mean number of AGM used post-operatively were slightly higher for Group B(0.24± 0.4) as compared to Group A (0.23± 0.4), though not statistically significant (p value 0.889).Two Group B patients had to undergo 5 post operative interventions, while only one in Group A. CONCLUSION: The total success rate of phacotrabeculectomy is greater with the use of topical preoperative steroids than the patients who did not use topical steroids.
