Abstract
PURPOSE
To understand the demographic profile, causes, clinical features and prognostic indicators of compressive lesions of the optic chiasm.
METHODS
This retrospective study was conducted on 68 patients with sellar/suprasellar lesion with possible compression effects on the optic chiasm who presented to our clinic from January 2020 to July 2022. Data collected was analyzed and results were tabulated.
RESULTS
Most common chiasmal lesion was found to be pituitary adenoma(62) followed by craniopharyngioma(4) and Rathke’s cleft cyst(2). Bitemporal hemianopia(11), optic disc pallor(15) and relative afferent pupillary defect(6) were important signs of compression. Most sensitive prognostic indicator was reduced Retinal Nerve Fibre Layer thickness on Optical Coherence Tomography.
CONCLUSION
Signs and symptoms of compressive lesions of the optic chiasm can be very diverse and knowledge about the same will help in early diagnosis and effective management- leading to good visual outcome.
