Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the role of transconjunctival intra-levator injection of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) in upper eyelid retraction in thyroid eye disease (TED).Methods: Retrospective interventional case series of 18 eyes of 10 patients who underwent transconjunctival TA injection (20 mg/mL) into the levator palpebrae superioris (LPS) muscle for TED-related upper eyelid retraction between 2017 to 2022. Results:Mean age was 45 years.Pre-treatment margin-reflex distance (MRD) 1 was 6.9+/- 2.3 mm. The mean number of TA injections was 2 +/- 0.67.Time to maximal response was 5.6 +/- 2.6 weeks. At mean follow-up of 14 months, MRD1 was 4.0 +/- 0.81 mm, showing improvement in all cases.Mean reduction in MRD1 was 3.1 +/- 1.2 mm (p<0.01). There was no regression from maximal response. None of the patients showed any complications associated with TA. Conclusion: Transconjunctival TA injection to LPS muscle is an effective treatment option for TED-related upper eyelid retraction.
