Abstract
Vitreous sample procurement using pars-plana vitrectomy is being more frequently applied in modern vitreo-retina practice. This has been made, in part, possible by the modern ”micro-incision vitrectomy systems” having valved cannulas and very high cut rates. This minimizes traction on the vitreous-retina interface and enhances the yield with or without infusion turned on. The technique is especially useful in young patients where the vitreous gel is resilient to aspiration during vitreous tap. The need for vitreous biopsy arises routinely in cases of endophthalmitis, infectious uveitis with unidentifiable etiology, masquerades and cytokine profiling especially in chronic uveitis. Maximizing the volume of vitreous sample obtained is often achieved using infusion turned on; however adequate volume of pure vitreous contents are obtained using air infusion. In our technique we demonstrate step-by-step procedure, and tips of minimizing risks and maximizing yield, during this procedure.
