Abstract

Pediatric cataract has been a major cause of preventable childhood blindness. It is important to identify and treat these cases as early as possible in order to prevent amblyopia. However, management of pediatric cataract is much more complicated than adult cataracts because of increased scleral elasticity, thicker corneas and increased risk of trauma from eye rubbing.

Special considerations are necessary intra-operatively such as to ensure continuous, smooth and well-centered anterior capsulotomy as this is a prerequisite for safe lens implantation. Choice of IOL, age related undercorrection and posterior capsulotomy, anterior vitrectomy are other additional challenges while performing pediatric cataract surgery. Our video helps to demonstrate common challenges encountered by beginners during pediatric cataract surgery and tips to overcome the same.
