Abstract
Synchysis scintillans, is a rare degenerative condition characterized by the accumulation of cholesterol in the vitreous. Anterior chamber synchysis occurs in eyes with aphakia or subluxated lens. These crystals are not attached to the vitreal framework & are seen as golden shower during eye movements and tend to settle out after movement. These free floating crystals facilitate demonstration of aqueous humour convection currents in AC.
The aqueous secretion, buoyancy, interaction between buoyancy and gravity, rapid eye movement are all responsible for the motion of aqueous in the AC. The temperature gradients that exist between the posterior and anterior surfaces of the AC induce the buoyancy. Aqueous in anterior moves down along the cooler cornea and in posterior part, it moves up along warmer iris which can be clearly seen in the video.
