Abstract
Methods-Here we describe two cases -an 8 year old child with stick injury and a 21 year old with metal IOFB with severe retinal injury. Both the patients underwent vitrectomy with IOFB removal using SO as adjunct.SO in both cases was injected before removal of foreign bodies and left in-situ in the 1st case and removed at the end of the surgery in 2nd case.
Results-IOFB could be removed in both cases successfully without any additional iatrogenic trauma to the eye especially during holding and manoeuvring the foreign body out of the eye. The high viscosity of SO also prevented deformation of the globe and provided stability during the entire surgery.
Conclusion:Silicon oil is a widely available, easy to use and an excellent adjunct in removing challenging and large intraocular foreign bodies. It can also be left in-situ in cases where tamponade is needed.
