Abstract
Aim:To determine the incidence of elevated serum homocysteine(S.H) in patients with isolated ischemic cranial nerve palsies(CNP).Design:Retrospective study.Materials & Methods:66 patients diagnosed with ischemic isolated CNP were enrolled, after informed consent. Thorough examination, routine bld.inv. & S.H. were done. Results:Mean age 55yrs (74.24% M & 25.76%F ).56.06% had elevated S.H.Sixth nerve is affected most 68.18%.Of 66 patients,37cases (56.06%)had elevated S.H. Patients > 40 yrs(59cases) & without any systemic risk factors (12cases) ,63.2% had elevated S.H. Patients <40years& without systemic risk (7cases), 4 cases(66.7%)had high S.H. levels. Conclusion:Cases without systemic risk factors ,S.H.can indirectly act as a risk factor for developing stroke in patients having isolated ischemic CNP.Accd to our study, patients with/without risk factors were statistically significant( p <0.005);56.06% isolated had elevated S.H,thus showing a great prelidiction towards a stroke.
