Abstract
Objective:To analyse the knowledge, attitude and practice pattern regarding consents in a cross section of ophthalmologists and report the lacunae in legal dimension and ethical aspect
Method: An online survey was conducted among 186 clinical ophthalmologists using a 51 point questionnaire dealing with Demographics, Knowledge, Attitude and Practice. Chi square test was used for detecting association.
Results: Knowledge about the consent was reasonably good across the participants. There is lacuna in the attitude and practice patterns especially in areas like consent in less than 18 years, blanket consent, details to be included in the consent, separate consent for anaesthesia, and consents in teaching and research.and content of consent.
Conclusions:More training about medical law and ethics are needed in the curriculum of medical students and Specific training for doctors in practice has to be considered especially individual practitioners and medical doctors than surgeons.
