Abstract
A prospective interventional study of corneal neurotization procedure using sural nerve graft co-aptation to the contralateral supratrochlear nerve, in eleven eyes of unilateral medically non-responding neurotrophic keratopathy was conducted. A few variations were attempted to expedite the surgical procedure. The main outcome measures were improvement in best corrected visual acuity, ocular surface parameters, ocular surface staining scores, corneal sensation and sub-basal nerve fibre plexus parameters determined by central confocal microscopy at baseline and 1-month, 3-month, 6-month, 9-month and 12-month follow up period.
The study documented 81.81% corneal sensation restoration at 6 months and significant improvement in the subbasal nerve fibre plexus. Improvement in ocular surface and reduction in neurotrophic keratopathy grade was perceived as early as 1-month follow-up at a significant level.
