Abstract

Aim: to compare the mean B-scan ultrasonographic optic nerve sheath diameter(ONSD) in patients with papilledema with normal controls and to establish normative values.

Method: Cross sectional case-control study including 100 patients(200eyes) with papilloedema and 100(200eyes) normal age and sex matched controls. The retrobulbar ONSD was measured 3 mm behind the retina using B scan ultrasonography in both patients and controls. Students “t” test was used to compare the mean ONSD values.

Results: There was a small female preponderance 109/200(54.5 %). The mean ONSD values in patients 4.91mm(±0.79); controls 3.02mm(±0.525mm SD)( p<0.001). Causes of papilledema were IIH-45, CVT-20, infective etiology-12, intracranial tumours- 16 and others- 7. Conclusion: B-scan ONSD significantly is higher in papilledema and a useful noninvasive imaging method in papilledema diagnosis. The normal cut-off ONSD values can be considered to be 3.5mm when clinical papilledema diagnosis is equivocal.
