Abstract
PURPOSE : The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the incidence, severity and treatment outcome of babies conceived naturally compared to those born by assisted reproductive technology.MATERIAL AND METHODS:This retrospective observational study included 474 premature infants among them 272(57.4%) conceived naturally and 202 (42.6%) were conceived by ART. RESULTS : Of the natural conception group, 32.4% infants had ROP while in ART group 73.8% infants had ROP (p <0.0001). A-ROP and plus spectrum disease were higher among ART group compared to natural conception (p <0.0001).Combined ROP laser and Injection anti VEGF was advised for 19 infants (6.98%) among the natural conception group compared with 44 infants (21.78%) , statistically significant (p 0.0001).CONCLUSION : The current study revealed significant incidence and severity of ROP among infants born of ART compared with natural conception. More prospective studies are needed to obtain more definitive data on this.
