Abstract
AIM
To study the clinical and microbiological profile, treatment modalities, anatomical and
functional outcomes among pediatric endogenous endophthalmitis (PEE) at a tertiary eye care center in South India.
METHODS
This is a retrospective study of PEE which included a detailed history, thorough ocular examination, systemic evaluation and treatment. Univariate regression analysis was done to identify factors predicting functional outcome.
RESULTS
Twenty one eyes of 21 subjects were studied. Descriptive statistics were obtained and analyzed. Twenty eyes underwent vitrectomy. Favorable functional and anatomical outcomes were seen in 7 and 15 eyes, respectively. Eyes undergoing vitrectomy did not show any significant correlation with good functional outcome.
CONCLUSION
In this study Gram-negative organisms are most common while P. agglomerans & B. cepacia are being reported for the first time as causative organism for PEE. This study provides valuable insights and revelations into PEE.
