Abstract
Our study was conducted for a period of 1 year in a tertiary eye hospital and was done to know the association between Thyroid hormone and Vitamin D levels in keratoconus patients. In literature search,it was found that both vitamin D receptor and thyroid hormone receptors are closely related and they both bind to similar kind of receptors .We didn’t find any study which evaluated both thyroid hormone and Vitamin D levels. This prompted us to do this study. This was a prospective cross-sectional study. All eyes were diagnosed as keratoconus or early keratoconus or within normal limits by clinical examination and topographical analysis.Serum free T3, free T4,TSH and vitamin D levels of all patients were estimated by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay method. There was a significant decrease (94%) in vitamin D levels and deranged thyroid hormone levels (16%) in keratoconus patients. So we suggest that thyroid hormone and vitamin D levels should be evaluated in all keratoconus patients.
