Abstract
Purpose: The study was planned to analyse the trends of orbital cellulitis and find a correlation between dry tap and partially resolved disease.
Methods: Patients with orbital cellulitis, from 2006 to 2020 were analysed . During computed tomography-guided aspiration of the subperiosteal abscess, failure of an aspirate was recorded as dry tap.
Results: The analysis identifies the shifting trend towards the secondary presentation of orbital cellulitis. It emphasizes the change in presentation of orbital cellulitis from painful lid swelling to painless residual proptosis resulting from an inadequately treated disease. Further, we document a decrease in post-sinusitis cases and increase in post-dental infections. This study also highlights a positive correlation between secondary presentations with dry tap.
Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of initiation and continuation of adequate therapy of orbital cellulitis, to avoid protracted course of the disease .
