Abstract
Purpose : To analyse the longterm outcomes of Type 1 keratoprosthesis (kpro)
Method: Retrospective case series of patients with type 1 kpro at our centre.
Results : 92 patients underwent type 1 keratoprosthesis [Boston-kpro (49) , Lucia (34) and Auro (9) ] from 2008 -2022. Indications included silicon oil filled eyes ( 48.9%) and chemical injuries (40.2%). BCVA>6/60 was maintained in 67% ,58.8% and 44.4% of eyes with BKP, Lucia and Auro kpro respectively for a median follow up of 7.4 years (1-13 years). At more than 5 years of follow up, 71.4%, 86.6% and 25% of BKP,Lucia and Auro kpro respectively were anatomically retained. Common complications included retroprosthetic membrane (60.5%,41%,50.2 %) and perioptic melt (18%,52%,22.2%) in BKP, Lucia and Auro respectively.
Conclusion:The longterm outcome of all versions of type 1 kpro is very encouraging and is comparable. The Auro/ Lucia can be an alternative to Boston Kpro when affordability or availability is a limiting factor.
