Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the clinical outcome of umbilical cord patch (UCP) transplantation in corneal perforations and descemetoceles.
Method: 48 eyes of 48 patients with corneal perforation or descemetocele of < 5.5 mm diameter were included, treated with UCP. Reduction in Corneal inflammation and vascularization, Graft-Host integration, Corneal thickness, anterior chamber anatomy, BCVA, topography, and astigmatisms are noted for 1.5 years Result: The mean time for re-epithelialization over the graft was 18.79 ± 6.24 days. The mean graft host integration time was 83.47 ± 21.82 days. No statistically significant difference was noted in Anterior chamber depth in postoperative 1.5 years. The mean corneal thickness post op 1.5 years remains unchanged. The vision improved in patients with peripheral or para-central perforations or descemetocele. Conclusion: UCP can serve as an alternative tissue for corneal reconstruction.
