Abstract
Purpose:Role of muscle biopsy in the diagnosis and management of patients presenting with lesions involving the extraocular muscles. Methods:A retrospective analysis of 18 patients who underwent muscle biopsy for lesions solely involving the extraocular muscles over the last 12 years. Results:The mean age of the cohort was 42.4 years with a male preponderance(n=10).Proptosis was the most common clinical presentation(n=13).MRI was the preferred diagnostic modality.Eleven cases showed muscle thickening on MRI.Lateral rectus and Inferior Rectus were the most frequently(n=5 each).Muscle biopsy confirmed diagnosis as IOID in 8 patients, dermoid in 2,leiomyoma,amyloidosis,extranodal marginal zone lymphoma, benign reactive lymphoid hyperplasia, sarcoid granuloma, and carcinoid in one patient each respectively.Biopsy was inconclusive in 2 patients. Conclusion: Extraocular muscles can be involved in a variety of orbital lesions.Muscle biopsy is indicated when there is sufficient doubt on imaging.
