Abstract
Non arteritic AION is a disease with cardiovascular risk factors leading to optic nerve head hypoperfusion. Our study aims to evaluate the risk factors. Medical records of 61patients with NAAION were retrospectively analysed. Mean age was 55.5yrs(range33-71),Mean visual acuity at presentation was6/24(range6/6-1/60)and field defects were commonly inferior altitudinal scotoma(56.7%).H/o diabetes(74.6%),hypertension(38%),cardiac disorder(11%)and hyperlipidemia(17.5%)were observed. Anatomical crowding of fellow eye disc(65.5%)was noted along with sectoral pallor(11%)due to previous h/o NAAION. High blood sugar levels(51%),elevated cholesterol levels(37%),high blood pressure(50%)and carotid intimo-medial thickening were observed. 8/16cases had elevated homocysteine levels.2nd eye involvement patients had diabetes(62.5%)and few had elevated homocysteine. This study concludes diabetes and crowded disc as major risk factors along with elevation of homocysteine level as an emerging risk factor.
