Abstract
aim- to evaluate the role of COVID-19 on cornea and its role behind micro fiber neuropathy(MFN) and ocular surface disease(OSD)
Method-21 post COVID survivors (group A) for this observational retrospective study. Control group of 42 subject (group B). In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) imaging done for both to ascertain the image of corneal sub basal plexus (CSBP) to study neuroma like structure, axonal beadings, and dendritic cells. OSDI questionnaire and shirmers test, lissamine staining used to evaluate dry eyes and ocular surface
Result- 18 cases of group A showed CSBP alterations and MFN, unlike group B. 8 patients reported increased sensations of eye surface in group A, which also featured beaded axons and neuroma like images in 82.6% and 65.22% respectively. Mean OSDI score >13. Dendritic cells are common. These findings indicate chronic nature of neuropathy
Conclusion- Sars-cov-2 induces microfiber neuropathy in ocular surface, sharing symptomatology and morphology with DED
