Abstract
Introduction:
This study examines macular thickness, ELM and EZ disruptions in SD-OCT images in fovea-involved diabetic macular edema.
Methods:
It is a retrospective pilot study. SD-OCT images of 11 patients with fovea-involved DME analyzed. No disruption of ELM and EZ categorized as grade 0, only disruption of ELM as grade 1, disruption of both ELM and EZ as grade 2. Foveal thickness recorded.
Results:
17 eyes of 11 patients, 6 men and 5 women with a mean age of 56 years (35-76 years) included. CME present in 11 eyes (64.71%), 3 eyes (17.65%) had CME with VMT, 1 eye (5.88%) had CME with serous RD (retinal detachment), and 2 eyes (11.76%) had diffuse macular edema. Five eyes (29.41%) had grade 0 ELM & EZ disruption with a foveal thickness of 243–315 microns (mean–280), and 12 eyes (70.59%) had grade 2 with a foveal thickness of 271–642 microns (mean–398).
Conclusion:
There is a statistically significant association between foveal thickness and disruption of the ELM & EZ in DME.
