Abstract
Aim: To study long-term efficacy and safety of presbyopic phakic intraocular lens (IPCL) in presbyopes
Methods: Prospective interventional study of 48 eyes implanted with IPCL. Outcomes measures were uncorrected near, distance and intermediate visual acuity (UNVA, UDVA, UIVA), visual quality, vault and endothelial cell loss (ECL) at 3 years.
Results: Mean age of cohort was 43.3±4.2 years, MRSE -5.2±4.9D. At 3 years, 75% eyes achieved UNVA ≥20/40 and all eyes achieved UDVA of 20/20 and UIVA of ≥20/32. Significant improvement in total HOAs (p=0.01) and Strehl ratio (p=0.004). Vault was 571.2±241.2 μm with significant decrease between 1 month and 3 years (p=0.001). ECL was 7.8%. Nuclear cataract necessitated phacoemulsification with IPCL removal performed in 6 eyes; mean time to surgery was 22.3±13.2 months.
Conclusion: Presbyopic IPCL provides good visual outcomes and spectacle-independence at all distances. Nuclear cataract formation is an important association in this age group.
