Abstract
Aim-To review the clinical profile and visual outcome in sympathetic ophthalmitis (SO) patients in 3 tertiary eye care centres of one organization in South India
Methodology-Retrospective analysis of case records of patients with diagnosis of SO from Jan 2018 to July 2022 in the 3 tertiary eye care centres was done. Inciting event, sympathizing eye, treatment, complications, visual outcomes of the patients was noted. Comparison and analysis was done.
Results-The most common inciting event for SO in all 3 centres was cataract surgery. Disease was more common in females. All the patients received oral steroids & 85% required immunosuppressants. Secondary glaucoma was present in 2%, development of cataract was seen in 20% of cases. The final BCVA of sympathizing eye was below 3/60 in 60% cases.
Conclusion-SO is a rare disease. Study of the disease in 3 tertiary eye care centres in South India can prove to be beneficial to determine clinical profile and outcome of the patients.
