Abstract
Introduction: Among the most common systemic cause of dry eye disease, diabetes mellitus is leading. The prevalence ranges from 15-33%.Tear hyperosmolarity instability caused by LFU & ocular surface dysfunction are etiologocally relevant.
Aim:To estimate the prevalence of Dry Eye Disease in patients of Type 2 DM diagnosed atleast 5 years prior, in a Cross- Sectional Observational Study.
Method:350 patients with T2DM who attended Ophthalmology OPD at a tertiary care hospital were randomly selected and included in the study after seeking proper informed consent. The tear film stability assesed by Tear Film Breakup Time, tear secretion assessed by the Schirmer’s Test (I & II).
Result: Schirmer’s I was abnormal in 185 of the subjects, Schirmer’s II in 166 & TBUT in 170.
Conclusion:This study found that a fairly high proportion of patients with T2DM had clinical evidence of Dry Eye disease more noticeable in those with longer duration of Diabetes, which was significant (p<0.05).
