Abstract
This study was undertaken in 12,899 participants to determine need for donor cornea recruited randomly from 25 rural clusters of district Gurgaon, Haryana, India. All individuals were examined in detail with a portable slit lamp for evidence of any corneal disease during the door-to-door examination. In participants with corneal disease amenable to keratoplasty, indication and prognostication for corneal transplantation and vision-related quality of life was assessed. In the total population, 435 participants had corneal opacity and corneal grafting was indicated in 74 eyes of 66 participants (15.2%) of which eight were bilaterally blind. Common indications for keratoplasty were post-surgical corneal decompensation (23.0%), corneal degenerations (17.6%) and trachoma (17.6%). Vision-related quality of life was significantly impaired in participants needing keratoplasty compared to controls (P<0.0001). This is a pioneer study to assess the population need for donor cornea.
