Abstract
Aim:
In this study, we performed Water drinking test(WDT) in normal patients with risk factors for developing glaucoma so that we can identify the occult ocular hypertensives/pre-perimetric glaucoma who will benefit from early diagnosis and treatment intervention.
Method:
Cross-sectional study of 100 eyes of 61 patients with no evidence of glaucoma but with atleast 2 risk factors were included. IOP peaks & fluctuations & correlation with presence of risk factors was analysed.
Results:
28 eyes had IOP higher than 30mmhg. the most significant risk factor was age> 60yrs & hypertension. 68% had either optic disc hemorrhage and/or high C:D ratio. A total of 61% had ocular hypertension.
Conclusion:
WDT is a useful & time-saving test in identifying ocular hypertension/ pre-perimetric glaucoma in high risk patients with normal IOP at one clinic visit. The predictive value of WDT in identifying patients that need medical intervention was 28%.
