Abstract
We studied disease asymmetry and disease-stage asymmetry between two eyes in 280 eyes of 140 patients diagnosed clinically with type 2 macular telangiectasia (MacTel). Based on disease stage symmetry (according to Gass and Blodi staging with multiple imaging techniques), we identified 2 groups; A) Symmetrical stage and B) Asymmetrical stage MacTel. Fellow eyes of patients with type 2 MacTel without any vascular or structural changes (confirmed on retinal imaging) were labelled as Stage 0.
We found asymmetrical disease stage in 40% patients and a 2-stage difference in 46% patients with asymmetrical MacTel at presentation. A 10% conversion from symmetrical to asymmetrical disease stage was seen at final visit. A 2-level disease stage progression was noted at last visit in one patient of this subgroup.
Thus, Type 2 MacTel can show both disease stage and disease asymmetry. Stage 0 is a distinct stage in MacTel which needs further evaluation and might have to be considered while staging.
