Abstract
This retrospective study included 30 patients with mean age 20.87±6.88 years. All patients had unilateral sensory deviation with best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≤6/60 and underwent unilateral horizontal muscle strabismus surgery, and followed up for 24 months. Patients were classified into Group A (sensory esotropia) and Group B (sensory exotropia), comprising 15 patients each. Successful outcome was assigned as postoperative deviation ≤10PD in primary position. The mean preoperative deviation in Group A was 38.8±10.46 PD and in Group B was 48.0±5.92 PD. Out of 30 patients, 29 achieved successful alignment in immediate postoperative period which was maintained till 12 months of follow up. After 24 months, 23 maintained this alignment, while 7 developed recurrent deviation >10PD, who belonged to Group B. On further evaluation, it was found that sensory exotropia, poor visual acuity at presentation and older age at surgery were associated with poor long term postoperative outcome.
