Abstract

A prospective study was conducted at tertiary eye centre to analyze nucleus drop (ND) during phacoemulsification. Total 52 ND occurred out of 9394 phacoemulsifications (0.5%). Pre-operative profile and 6-month post-operative outcome were analysed. Analysis of ND by surgeons of different levels of expertise [ trainee surgeon, Junior medical officer (JMO) and Senior medical officer (SMO)] in complicated category (CC) and uncomplicated category (UC) was done. Trainee surgeons operated only UC and contributed to total 11(21.1%) ND. In CC and UC, JMO had 3.8% & 15.3% ND respectively. SMO operated maximum CC and contributed to 25% of ND. ND occurred most frequently in nucleus emulsification (69.2%) followed by trenching (15.4%). 90.2% ND patients achieved final vision of ≥ 6/12 at 6-months. 15.4% developed post-operative complications like macular edema and epiretinal membrane. This study highlights prospective analysis of ND occurrence among different levels of surgical expertise.
