Abstract

PURPOSE – To study influence of posture on absorption of tropicamide and phenylephrine eye drops in healthy individuals .

METHODS – A prospective study done at tertiary care hospital in 50 healthy volunteers from October 2021 – March 2022. Tropicamide – 0.8% , phenylephrine – 5% eye drops was applied to 50 participants with one eye in sitting and other eye in supine position . We measured pupil dilatation before and 5 minutes after instilling drops in each position ,using scale.

INCLUSION CRITERIA – healthy patients coming for eye checkup

EXCLUSION CRITERIA – operated ,traumatic mydriasis , diabetic mellitus, Psudoexfoliation , iridocyclitis , posterior segment pathology.

RESULTS – The mean pupil dilatation in sitting position – 2.73mm , supine position -3.96mm

CONCLUSION – supine position increases absorption due to increase in contact of drug between cornea epithelium and lid where there is overflow of drug in sitting position
