Abstract
A retrospective observational study was done to evaluate skill transfer in 1-month Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) training programme by ICO-OSCAR. Total of 1842 surgeries performed by 95 MSICS trainees divided into 3 groups as 1st year residents, fellows and external trainees were included. The mean score of 1st five and last five cases were calculated and statistically analysed. Mean score of 1st five cases in the three groups were 45.91±17.87, 57.57±16.16, and 56.86±17.82, respectively, and mean score of last 5 cases of the groups were 50.93±16.26, 57.84±15.83 and 60.48±14.58, respectively. There is statistically significant improvement in the scores in 1st year resident group (p=0.011). The other 2 groups with prior MSICS experience and high initial scores showed minimal improvement. The study shows that short term training program is an effective and efficient approach to progressively master MSICS skills, especially in trainees without prior experience.
