Abstract
AIM-To assess whether topical steroids improve patient comfort and clinical signs in viral conjunctivitis. Methods-Patients presenting with follicular conjunctivitis, presumed viral in origin, were randomized to either receive or not receive low dose topical steroids for 1 week. At 1 week review patient was assessed based on improvement of symptoms and signs. Results-100 patients were randomized.50 patients received low dose topical steroid eyedrops whereas 50 patients did not receive it. Most of the patients who received topical steroids were found to have significant improvement in clinical signs and symptoms as compared to those who didn’t receive the same. Conclusion-There is now evidence to support the use of topical steroids for patients presenting with follicular conjunctivitis presumed to be viral in origin.
