Abstract
Silicon Oil is considered a better internal tamponade, both for anatomic and functional success RD surgery. But Oil removal is associated with a risk of recurrent RD. A retrospective and comparative study was conducted analysing records of all subjects who underwent PPV with Silicon Oil (SO) tamponade between August 2018 and July 2019 with minimum 1 year of F/U. Group 1 included 70 patients who underwent Silicon oil removal (SOR) within 6 months while, second group included 68 patients without SOR. In Group 1, 35.7% had Re-RD after SOR within 6 months whereas in group 2, 85.3% had attached retina, without any significant intraocular complication with SO tamponade except cataract. The factors for re-detachment were PVR, formation of new breaks, ocular trauma and short duration of SO tamponade. These observations can be considered for non removal of SO unless and until there is any complication and this can be a basis for conducting future prospective studies to establish this fact.
