Abstract
Purpose: To compare the surgical outcomes of macular hole surgery performed by a novice vitreoretinal surgeon in 1 st year(group 1) vs the second year (group 2) of post-fellowship training
Materials and methods: A retrospective review of all MH surgeries performed by a single surgeon in the years 2021(1 st year) and 2022( 2 nd year) were analyzed. Pre-op visual acuity, IOP, minimum hole diameter, and macular hole closure rates were compared between the groups.
Results: The surgeon operated on 10 cases each in both groups(1 and 2). Age, pre-op BCVA, pre-op IOP, minimum hole diameter, POD 30 vision, and IOP were comparable among the groups. Macular hole closure was higher (100%) in group 2 compared to group 1(70 %). The need for intra-operative assistance and complications was higher in group 1.
Conclusion: The surgical success tremendously increased in the second year compared to the first year in terms of higher hole closure rates and lesser complications.
