Abstract
Aim: Approach to understanding the cause, radiological features, prognosticating factors and the impact of timely visual rehabilitation in children with cerebral visual impairment(CVI) in a tertiary eye care centre in Southern India
Method: Prospective study done in 95 children with CVI. All underwent detailed evaluation with visual rehabilitation.
Result: Commonest causes were perinatal hypoxia (72.6%), neonatal hypoglycemia (4.2%) followed by encephalitis and seizures. MRI features were hypoxic ischemic encephalopathic changes (73.6%), parieto-occipital gliosis (10.5%), post meningitis /encephalitis changes (4.2%). Typical neurological deficits noted were global developmental delay, seizures, cerebral palsy with ocular features being disc pallor, squint and nystagmus.
Conclusion: Each child with CVI has their own unique deficits, necessitating an individualized approach. Early implementation of integrated developmental therapies assists in improvement in the visual function.
