Abstract

A hospital based randomized prospective parallel group comparative study on 40 eyes of 40 patients with primary open angle glaucoma. Group 1 had 20 patients of trabeculectomy with intraoperative 0.04% Mitomycin C (MMC) for 2 minutes, while group 2 included 20 patients with Ologen implant. All the patients were followed up postoperatively for minimum 6 months. Comparison was done based on intraocular pressure (IOP) control, bleb characteristics and postoperative complications.

Complete success at the end of 6 months in MMC group was 90% which was 95% in Ologen group(p=0.62). At 6 months, the mean IOP in MMC group was 10.55 ±2.72 mmHg while in Ologen group it was 13.35 ±2.94 mmHg (p<0.05). Bleb in Ologen group were more diffuse and vascular than MMC group. The overall postoperative complications were higher in MMC group but was not statistically significant. This study suggest that Ologen is a safe and effective alternative to MMC in trabeculectomy, with similar success rate.
