Abstract

Aim: To study socio demographic profile, causes of blindness and percentage of disability.

Methods: A descriptive hospital based study of 79 patients seeking visual disability certificate. They were classified as visually disabled as per disability act 1995 and the causes of blindness were noted. This study was conducted under the aegis of declaration of Helsinki.

Results: Most common age group was 21-30years (44.30%) and mean age was 32 years. Male cases were more and male to female ratio was 2.29: 1. Most common causes of blindness were congenital anomalies (25.31%) followed by retinitis pigmentosa (17.72%) and least were staphyloma and empty socket. Avoidable causes of visual impairment were found in 39.24% cases.

Conclusion: Blindness due to congenital anomolies and retinitis pigmentosa need genetic counselling. Avoiding trauma, early diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation is needed to prevent blindness from avoidable causes.
