Abstract
PURPOSE: To present a case of hydatid cyst which responded dramatically to injection bleomycin.
SUBJECT/METHOD: A nine year old girl presented with complaint of right eye protrusion for 5-6 months which had worsened in the last few days. On examination she had proptosis, eyelid edema and chemosis and exposure keratopathy. CECT showed a well defined retrobulbar intra conal multiloculated lesion with some peripheral enhancement. A provisional diagnosis of venolymphatic malformation with hemorrhage was made and patient taken up for aspiration and injection of bleomycin. Clear fluid was seen in aspirate and sent for histopathology where a diagnosis of hydatid cyst was made. She was started on albendazole and followed up to see response to bleomycin.
RESULTS: After 3 months about 70 percent reduction in the volume of the cyst is observed.
Conclusion: Intralesional administration of bleomycin, as sclerosant, may have a promising role in non surgical management of orbital echinococcus.
